Bioclear: natural-looking repairs that preserve your own teeth
Bioclear is a modern technique that uses warmed, tooth-coloured composite to repair chips, rebuild worn teeth and close small spaces, while aiming to preserve as much of your natural tooth as possible. It’s one of the treatments we’re proud to offer that many practices in Northern Ireland still don’t.

Bioclear at Appletree with Dr Joanne Redpath
Bioclear at Appletree is carried out by Dr Joanne Redpath. Joanne qualified from Queen’s University Belfast in 2002, and her general dentistry work includes white composite fillings.
Joanne has completed Bioclear Anterior and Posterior training and keeps her knowledge current through continuing professional development. Bioclear uses shaped transparent matrices and warmed, tooth-coloured composite to rebuild tooth contours. It is an additive approach, aiming to preserve natural tooth structure wherever clinically appropriate.
For front teeth, Bioclear may offer a way to address chips, wear or spaces. It can also be considered for damaged or worn back teeth, where restoring shape and contact with neighbouring teeth is important. Your teeth, gums and bite all help determine which treatment options may be suitable; Bioclear will not be the right choice for every concern.
If you would like to learn whether Bioclear could help with your own teeth, arrange an assessment to discuss your concerns and explore the options together with Joanne. View Joanne Redpath’s Bioclear dentist profile.
A better answer than veneers — for the right cases
Traditional veneers usually mean filing down healthy tooth to fit them. Bioclear takes a different, gentler approach: warmed, tooth-coloured composite is shaped around your natural tooth using specially designed clear matrices, then sculpted and polished to a glass-like finish. Your own tooth structure is preserved wherever clinically appropriate.
What Bioclear can fix
- Chips and worn edges on front teeth
- Small gaps and spaces between front teeth
- Uneven front teeth that need their shape rebuilt
- Damaged or worn back teeth, where restoring shape and contact with neighbouring teeth matters
Why patients love it
- Minimally invasive: an additive approach that aims to preserve healthy tooth
- Strong and stain-resistant — the polished finish resists staining better than older bonding
- Natural-looking — shaped and colour-matched to blend seamlessly
- More affordable than veneers or crowns in many cases
- Often completed in one or two visits
What to expect
After a consultation to check Bioclear is right for you, your dentist cleans and prepares the tooth (no aggressive drilling), places the matrices, and injection-moulds the composite into a natural shape. It’s then cured, sculpted and polished. You walk out with a result that looks and feels like your own teeth — only better.
How Bioclear compares
Vs veneers and crowns. Veneers and crowns require us to remove a layer of healthy tooth structure — once done, that can’t be reversed. Bioclear is additive: we build up the tooth and aim to preserve its natural structure. It’s significantly less expensive, completed in fewer visits, and if anything ever needs adjusting in future, the tooth underneath has been preserved.
Vs traditional white fillings (composite bonding). Older bonding techniques rely on the dentist hand-sculpting composite freehand. The result depends heavily on technique and can chip or stain at the edges over time. Bioclear’s injected, fully-enclosed composite produces a seamless, highly polished surface designed to resist staining.
Vs orthodontics. Closing a gap with braces or aligners can take six to eighteen months. Where it’s suitable, Bioclear can often close a small gap in one visit, though it isn’t a substitute for orthodontics when teeth need to move.
Frequently asked
How long does Bioclear last?
With good oral hygiene and routine hygiene visits, Bioclear restorations are designed to last many years. Because the composite is bonded directly to your enamel rather than glued onto a prepared surface, the restoration is highly durable and predictable.
Will it look natural?
Yes. The composite is colour-matched to your existing teeth and polished to a natural-looking finish. Most patients say they forget the restorations are there.
Does it hurt?
Most patients find it comfortable. Because Bioclear is an additive approach, preparation is usually minimal, and Joanne will talk you through whether any anaesthetic is needed for your treatment.
Can Bioclear fix every gap or chip?
No — some larger cases are better suited to other treatments, and we’ll always recommend the most appropriate option after assessing your teeth in person.
